The notes filtered up through the New York-thin floors and soon became her favorite song — one that Merritt wrote in dark bars as an exercise in genre rather than any sort of real ode to love. Everyone was crying, including me. It was a very, very bad performance. Still, the charm of that track — and 69 Love Songs as a whole — is in its versatility. Songwriting is not about expressing something.
Merritt went into 69 Love Songs as a kind of musical anthropologist — and satirist.
Legend has it that Stephin Merritt came up with the idea for 69 Love Songs while sitting in an elegant midtown Manhattan piano bar. He originally planned for it.
Stephin Merritt will either love it or hate it — quite a gamble to play with one of your heroes. Necessary cookies are absolutely essential for the website to function properly. 69 Love Songs Tribute: A Benefit for Time Out Youth
The segment debuted in Mexico early this year, as Ramones played matchmaker and invited single female viewers to apply for a date with the house band’s keyboardist, Charly Sade. The segment, conceived as a parody of the growing dating-show phenomenon, became an instant ratings hit. Since then, Ramones has hosted four editions of La Pesera, each more successful than the preceding.
La Pesera — the title is a colloquial Mexican term for bus, from back when the fare cost a peso — is one of the most “honest” reality shows on Mexican television, Ramones said. Here nobody is offering to turn you into an instant millionaire. UnivisiM-sn is picking up the “senior” edition of the show, in which year-old bachelor Carlos Alexandre is introduced to 15 mature divorcees and widows, chosen from some women who wrote in.
Also, the book is now available from Amazon and other booksellers, even if it had a Dec 11 pub date. Honestly, this is the kind of thing I wish I.

A fully illustrated oral history of the Magnetic Fields’ triple album, 69 Love Songs – an album that was afforded “classic” status by many almost as soon as it was released. LD Beghtol’s book is chatty, incestuous, funny, dark, digressive, sexy, maddening, and delightful in equal measures. It documents a vital and influential scene from the inside, involving ukuleles and tears, citations and footnotes, analogue drum machines, and floods of cognac.
Oh, and a crossword puzzle too. The centre of the book is the secret history of these tuneful, acerbic, and sometimes heartbreaking songs of old love, new love, lost love, punk rock love, gay love, straight love, experimental music love, true love, blue love, and the utter lack of love that fill the album – as told by participants, fans, imitators, naysayers, and others.

The Magnetic Fields – 69 Love Songs Review
There are certain television shows that manage to challenge us intellectually, or require large amounts of thought and attention from their audiences in order to fully comprehend the storyline. While those intense political dramas or concentrated murder mysteries are exciting and hold a place in my heart, more often times than not, I can be found watching my ultimate genre of choice — reality television.
Reality shows are perfect for any occasion. The original is by far the best of them all, though. The show follows a similar layout to most of our favorite reality series.

Valentine’s Day is the day for love songs, so we’re celebrating the holiday with Stephin Merritt, who has a triple CD called “69 Love Songs. His songs are clever permutations of love song cliches of every genre from Gilbert and Sullivan to rock, written from both a gay and straight point of view. Our rock critic, Ken Tucker, put “69 Love Songs” at the top of his 10 best list. MERRITT: I’m a compulsive list-maker, and I made dozens of lists in the course of making “69 Love Songs” and making genres of music and lists of instruments that I could be using and different cliched love-song situations that kept turning up.
GROSS: Did you listen to a lot of love songs and try to catalog all the genres as you were doing this project? And I would sit at the juke box and notice what they were playing. And they play a lot of British New Wave music from the early ’80s, which is a great source for lyrics for me, because it’s got so much variety in it. People talk about being machines or about having very special hair or dying every day or — The surrealism in the lyrics New Wave was a great inspiration for me, and it constantly churns up new possible genres of love songs that I wouldn’t get if I were sitting in a piano bar.

THE Brooklyn Academy of Music will present its Next Wave of Song series next weekend, celebrating, for the second year, what it calls ”innovative, contemporary singer-songwriters. For one thing, all are droll, polished lyricists. In an age of slovenly rhyme and sloppy meter, this counts as a greater innovation than one might suspect. Take Mr. His CD, ”69 Love Songs,” was a tour de force of deadpan pop ventriloquism.
In 69 love songs, he offered an encyclopedia of pop songwriting styles, most centered on rock ‘n’ roll’s post-Elvis era but a few dating to Irving Berlin and Cole Porter. What united all these disparate voices was Mr. What the album revealed, above all, was his craftsmanship. Once you’ve established a rhyme scheme based on the original idea, it’s very hard to match that idea in a second verse. All three of these songwriters — all in their 30’s — are consumed with the sound of pop songs from earlier periods.
Instant Indie Classic: The Magnetic Fields – 69 Love Songs
Anger crashes into despair and confusion with weird giddy rolls of euphoria and glassy moments of deadened inertia. When this happened to me, in September , I turned to an extraordinary album that helped reflect and dissect the whole experience. Released in , 69 Love Songs is a brilliant, sprawling, three-part record by The Magnetic Fields , the lo-fi indie collective formed in by Boston-born, New York-based songwriter Stephin Merritt with a revolving cast of male and female vocalists plus author Lemony Snicket on accordion.
Pop snobs loved the layers of reference: the songs were always about songs. The subject, he says, is not love, but love songs. With all the cynical wit of a modern Dorothy Parker , he planned to pick apart all the cliches of the canon while showcasing his ability to mass produce catchy melodies like a vintage Brill Building jangler.
